Reducing 50 years to acouple of paragraphs is a challenge. My life has been fun and exciting. I married Mary Chaussee right after graduation from Yale, and we immediately headed to Palo Alto, CA for two years at Stanford Graduate School of Business. I worked for Baxter Healthcare for ten years, spending time in Chicago, Brussels, and - finally - here in Newport Beach where we have lived since 1976. Upon leaving Baxter, I co-founded a company (Caremark) in the home healthcare field. We sold the company some 8 years later, and I have been doing private investing in start-up healthcare companies ever since. Caremark is still around, although in a very different form as part of CVS/Caremark.

My focus now is philanthropy and an active involvement in not-for-profit organizations. I have been Chairman of the Board for our local business council, our local community foundation, and our local hospital. I am still on the board of the hospital where Mary and I recently spearheaded an effort to establish a comprehensive diabetes center that provides care for people with all types of diabetes, regardless of ability to pay. Our nineteen year-old granddaughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (formerly called Juvenile Diabetes) when she was 2, and we have been committed to finding a cure for the disease ever since. Mary is on the board of our local chapter of JDRF, and I served for two years as the Chairman of the Board of JDRF International.

The relaxing part of my life has been a bit of golf and travels to fun and unusual places. Mary and I have been to most of the "usual" places, and we have also taken trips to Turkey, Greece, Morocco, Israel, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Antarctica. We visit our two children and four grandchildren as often as possible.

School Story

I have such good memories of growing up in Sioux City. I recall the great teachers at Whittier, the always competitive pentathlon days, and, as a 6th-grader, getting excused from class along with George Heinse, Doug Haugen, and Ricky Cowling to mix and mold balls of clay for the lower grades. East Junior was notable for the opportunity to meet new friends from the other grade schools, experience the concept of changing teachers and rooms as we went from subject to subject, go to weekend parties, start interscholastic sports, etc. None of us on the track team will ever forget Vic's yelling "Hey ... Ralphie, boy" as we waited for Coach Weaver to join us on the bus. High School brought more sports, exposure to more courses, and a serious interest in the opposite sex. For me, Miss Pollock, Coach Farrell, and Miss Helt will always stand out as the best of a great group of teachers. We were lucky to have them.
